What counselling is
- Counselling is a talking therapy
- It provides you with an opportunity to explore your difficulties
- It helps you to understand your feelings better and make sense of your experience
- It can help you to increase and maintain a greater sense of wellbeing
- It empowers you to make changes in your life should you wish to do so
What counselling is not
- Your counsellor will not give you advice nor offer you solutions but will help you make your own choices
- Your counsellor will not tell you what you want to do
- Your counsellor is there to support you not to analyse or give you a diagnosis
What you can expect
- You can expect to be closely listened to by someone who has experience in helping people sort out their feelings
- You can expect your counsellor to be respectful and non judgemental
- You will be provided with a safe and supportive environment in which to talk freely and openly about all your concerns
What is expected of you
In order to get the most from your counselling sessions:
- You should be prepared to work with your counsellor to help yourself
- It is important that you are willing to talk about yourself, explore your feelings and attempt to understand yourself
better
- You need to feel able to make a commitment to attend regularly and take an active part in your sessions
